but when I heard her voice, I was like, I have to show you guys. – [Kaleigh Baker] Thank you. (soulful music) – Love that drums are heavy. And the song is called “The
Weight of it All” so… – ♪ The man ♪ ♪ He don’t like me much ♪ – Hear that vowel. Don’t, don’t. – ♪ I was bad ♪ – Bad… (laughs) With these slides. – ♪ I done drank too much ♪ – And dental d’s, so duh,
instead of a normal duh. – ♪ Shackles and chains ♪ ♪ And he’s as crooked as can be ♪ ♪ You see ♪ – Oh, sexy saxophone. Love it. So she’s using a lot of jazz nuances. I love her. I feel like she’s a mix of like Adele and Janis Joplin,
which is like oh… And then blues, and oh so cool. Anyway I love this warmth, this really big low larynx feel she’s got. You can find that feeling by doing a woo woo woo, like a big angry bear. That is how you get that warm sound. She also is doing slides and scoops. So a scoop is just not hitting that note dead on like (straight tone hums). It’s (scoops)… Underneath the note, and
then getting to the note. She also is got this big wobbly vibrato, unusual vowel modifications. I just love it. – ♪ I am mad ♪ ♪ Got framed in a terrible way ♪ ♪ Me not to blame ♪ – Ehh, then pushing the
breath through at the end. – ♪ To look that way ♪ ♪ He’s as big as a whale ♪ ♪ I’m as small as a snail ♪ – There’s just so much going on. Like big as a… She goes into this forward place. Eh eh eh some place, and then small and back to the woo woo woo place. I love how she is leaving the notes, getting off the notes. So some of them she’s sliding off, and putting breath through. Some she’s keeping straight
and putting a vibrato on. Some she’s kind of… diminuendo-ing. That’s a weird way of saying that, but she’s making quieter, and some she’s crescendoing
and making it bigger. It’s amazing. – ♪ And now you see it’s not only me ♪ ♪ It’s just the weight of it all ♪ – The… – ♪ It’s just the weight of it all ♪ – She’s just playing with the tones. – ♪ Pushin’ down on me ♪ ♪ And I cannot breathe ♪ ♪ No, it’s just the weight of it all ♪ – And she’s changing it each time. So she’ll be like “weight of it all,” singing on the vowel, and “weight” and then closing. It’s just so playful
and comes from her soul. – ♪ And I can’t escape it all ♪ ♪ It’s surrounding me ♪ – I have no idea why this woman isn’t known everywhere. I think she’s… – ♪ No, I have had ♪ ♪ Not so much as a peep from above ♪ ♪ It’s driving me mad ♪ ♪ The trouble I’ve seen
you wouldn’t believe ♪ ♪ Imagine this ♪ ♪ You can find me underneath the sea ♪ ♪ That’s just the weight of it all ♪ – It is so heavy. – ♪ That’s just the weight of it all ♪ ♪ Pushing down on me ♪ – I love that as well. – ♪ And I cannot breathe ♪ – I love the (singing uh). The first time I ever heard that was in Etta James “At Last”. And I just loved that too. It just makes it feel like oh, my emotions are just falling out of me. – ♪ It’s just the weight of it all ♪ – Bit of distortion on there – ♪ And I can’t escape it at all ♪ – Woo! – ♪ It’s surrounding me and I ♪ ♪ I cannot be ♪ – So these growls, these ugh ugh is a bit further back than maybe your metal distortions. If you do this in metal, you end up sounding a bit like the Cookie Monster, but you hear it a lot when people like Christina Aguilera on the hey… It’s a bit musical theater as well, but and bluesy and I love it. I love that style. Oh god, you could just see how involved in the music she is.
